The sixth International Symposium on Chinese Characteristics and Chinese Teaching was held in JNU's College of Chinese Language and Culture on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. In attendance were more than 110 experts and scholars from countries including China, the United States, Spain, New Zealand, Japan and Malaysia. The in-depth, multi-angle symposium covered research on Chinese characteristics and Chinese teaching from an interdisciplinary perspective; the nationalized Chinese teaching model; international Chinese teaching resources and teaching material construction; and testing research on Chinese as a second language.

Shi Xuehao, party secretary of the College of Chinese Language and Culture, hosted the opening ceremony. Dean Shao Yi delivered a welcome speech, noting that multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary examination of Chinese characteristics should and would be an important research field and development direction in the future. He said he hoped symposiums on Chinese characteristics were not only an academic platform for Chinese scholars, but also an exchange for all who care for Chinese research and popularization to promote the development of research on the Chinese language.

Prof. Zhang Yujin, president of the Chinese Linguistics Society of Guangdong, also spoke at the opening ceremony. Zhang said international education in Chinese language is a basic project for the construction of national cultural soft power and an innovative development in Chinese culture in the new era. Zhang said he hoped the experts would have in-depth exchanges on relevant issues like Chinese ontology feature mining; Chinese international teacher training; textbook compilation, and overall planning of teaching methods. He also said he hoped they would reach consensus by combining information technology, the media environment and the new international situation to provide more diversified ideas and ways for Chinese to go international.

The symposium included four invited academic reports, 13 groups of papers and a preface salon for Chinese teaching and research. Experts and scholars conducted discussions in seven research fields: ontology research, Chinese language teaching research, interdisciplinary Chinese language research, teacher training, information technology, resource database and textbook construction, and research on learners.
