Dr. Zhang Hong, who helped save a man's life in flight, was granted the honorary title JNU Model Traditional Chinese Physician at a commendation ceremony in the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University on Nov. 28.

On Nov. 19, on China Southern flight from Guangzhou to New York, a man in his 70s was suffering from urinary retention, a life-threatening condition. Zhang, who was traveling to New York to attend an international academic conference, did not hesitate to suck out urine through a tube, risking infection. He drew out nearly 800ml of urine in 37 minutes.

The story quickly spread in both mainstream and social media. Many media reported it in detail, including People's Daily, Xinhua News Agency, China Central Television (CCTV), China National Radio (CNR), China News Service (CNS) and China Youth Daily. The Sina Weibo hashtag relating to the incident appeared three times and attracted 940 million views. In addition, Zhang's good deed was positively reported with Chinese doctor as keywords in headlines in many overseas media, including The Sun in the United Kingdom.

In his speech, Zhang, director of the interventional and vernacular specialty, expressed his gratitude for the honor to the school and hospital. He said saving lives was a doctor’s instinct and he had vowed, in the graduation ceremony of the Medical College of Jinan University, to devote his whole life to medical practice. Zhang also said every unknown medical caregiver on the front line deserved to be a role model.
