The third Outstanding Social Scientists Conference of Guangdong and the eighth awards ceremony of the Outstanding Social Scientist in Philosophy of the Social Sciences was held in Guangzhou on Sept. 10. Prof. Cheng Guofu was honored as one of the outstanding social scientists in Guangdong, and more than 40 scientific achievements of Jinan University won awards, including 12 first prizes, 17 second prizes and 11 third prizes. Xia Quan, JNU's deputy secretary of Party Committee and Secretary of the Commission for Discipline Inspection and over 20 prize-winners attended the conference.

As a professor and doctoral advisor in the College of Chinese Language and Literature, Cheng is a leader in the study of ancient Chinese literature. He is a Yangtze River Scholar specially appointed by Ministry of Education, as well as a leader in philosophy of the social sciences included in the 10,000 Talents Program. He is also a cultural master and a talent in political theory, news, publishing and literature of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China.

It is noteworthy that Cheng is an expert enjoying a special allowance from the State Council. He also holds many other honorary titles: a national candidate of the Millions of Talent Project, outstanding middle-aged expert, selected member supported by the Program for New Century Excellent Talents in Universities under the Ministry of Education, and Pearl River Scholar. He has published more than 150 papers in Literary Review, Literary Heritage and Literature & Art Studies. Moreover, he has led more than 20 programs, including as a major program supported by the National Social Science Fund of China: Collection and Research of Published Chinese Fiction of Past Dynasties.
In addition, Cheng was involved in general programs supported by the National Social Science Fund, programs by the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars of China and those by Ministry of Education. He was awarded second prize in the sixth Compelling Achievements Award of Scientific Research in Colleges and Universities (Humanities and Social Sciences); first and second prizes of the Outstanding Achievements Award of Philosophy and Social Sciences in Guangdong four times; and the Excellent Papers Award of Literary Review.

The winners are listed collectively by the Publicity Department of Guangdong  and the Guangdong Federation of Social Science Association. Since the award for Outstanding Achievement in Philosophy of Social Science was established in 2004, it has been given listed every two years, and it is now the highest government award in the field.
