The final contest in the Seventh National Photoelectric Design Competition for College Students kicked off at Qingdao University on Aug. 20. Five teams from the Department of Photoelectric Engineering in JNU's College of Science and Engineering won one first prize, two second prizes and two third prizes. JNU also won the Outstanding Organization Award and Prof. Fang Junbin the Excellent Guide Teacher Award.

On the theme of Take the lead and display the charm of photoelectricity, this contest included road shows and oral presentation. Seven contest divisions were categorized, for the north, northeast, northwest, southwest, east, southeast and center of China. Experts from different levels, such as famous photoelectronic enterprises and national committees, were invited to be the judges. The projects involved new applications of photoelectronic information technology in fields including medical treatment, environment and safety.
A total of 1,448 teams from 178 universities entered. After fierce competition in the seven divisions, 198 teams from 91 universities reached the finals.
Sponsored by the Chinese Optical Society and the Subcommittee of Teaching Guidance for Photoelectric Information Science and Engineering, this competition is a top-level competition in the field of photoelectricity in colleges and universities. It has been held biennially from 2008 to 2018 but is now to become annual.
