On behalf of China, a JNU team of five teachers and students from the College of Journalism and Communication's Department of Advertising attended the Roger Hatchuel Academy (RHA) College Competition of the 66th Cannes International Festival of Creativity in Cannes, France, from June 16 to 23.
Founded in 1954 as Cannes International Advertising Festival, the event has become the most influential advertising industry event in the world. It has gone through 66 sessions.
The festival's evaluation and competition module has three parts: the Cannes Lions Award Ceremony, focusing on outstanding marketing communication solutions and excellent advertising work; the Young Lions Competition for marketing communicators under 23; and the RHA College Competition for college students. All participants in the RHA College Competition are excellent advertiing students recommended by various countries or regions. This year, 38 college students from 32 countries and regions participated. JNU's Sun Weikang of the Department of Advertising's 2016 class was the only student from the Chinese mainland recommended to represent China in this competition.
Sun participated in all the RHA activities. As a member of a team formed with four other participants from Brazil, India, the United Arab Emirates and Nigeria, he participated in a proposal contest titled How to Make the Creative Industry More Inclusive. As one of the winning teams, it was recommended to participate in a creative internship camp at Google Inc. in the United States this year.
In Cannes, the JNU team met several times with Fan Yaowei, an outstanding advertising alumnus of the School of Journalism and Communication, who is CEO and founder of the Shanghai F5 Company. Fan is a regular guest in Cannes, having won the Golden Lion and Silver Lion Awards many times. This year, as a special guest, he gave a speech titled Innovation in a 5000-Year-Old Culture: China's Tech Revolution and gave a special interview to the festival's official media. His speech was featured as the fourth-day cover story by the designated official daily newspaper of the festival.
