The seventh 5A Guangdong Province Awarding Ceremony and the 2018 Commendation Conference for Advanced Classes and Excellent Students were held on May 9 at JNU. Among those commended during the conference were 10 5A Excellent Classes, 10 JNU Excellent Class Monitors, 100 Pacesetters of the Outstanding Student Award, and winners of scholarships, honorary titles and various competitions above provincial level. They were presented awards by school leaders including Party Secretary Lin Rupeng, President Song Xianzhong, and Vice Presidents Liu Jiesheng, Rao Min and Zhang Hong.

Last year, the awards JNU issued totaled over 34.42 million RMB to undergraduates:
•2,862 National Scholarships, National Encouragement Scholarships, and Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Overseas Chinese Scholarships.
•5,734 school-level special scholarships for excellent students and student cadres and for outstanding performance in athletic, academic, literary and art activities.
•1,309 prizes and honors in competitions at or above provincial level.
•51 socially funded scholarships, including the Philip K.H. Wong Scholarships.
•1,113 school-level honorary titles such as Excellent Students, Excellent Student Cadres and Excellent Class Monitors.

Twelve outstanding JNU teachers, including Academician Liu Renhuai and Associate Prof. Su Bingtian, were invited to read the award citations. Peng Yu, a Taiwanese student in JNU`s College of Foreign Studies, has won many awards in international and national speech contests and been awarded JNU Star Model Awards. On behalf of outstanding students, Peng said that after close contact with traditional Chinese culture, she determined to use her professional skills to disseminate the brilliant traditional Chinese culture of five millennia to the world.

Centered on the theme of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of Macao’s return to China, the awarding ceremony presented comedy sketches designed and performed by JNU students according to the model deeds of outstanding students.

More than 1,600 teachers and students attended the ceremony, including leaders of relevant departments and colleges and undergraduate counselors. Parent representatives were also invited.
