The Jinan Reading Club and the 2019 Jinan Book Festival kicked off at the main and south campus libraries on April 22, a day before the 24th World Book and Copyright Day. With reading classics and passing on Chinese culture as the theme, and in response to President Xi's slogan Spreading excellent Chinese traditional cultures all over the world, this activity aimed to enhance students' cultural accomplishments and aesthetic tastes, and to build a good reading environment on campus.
The 2018 JNU Library Reading Report, issued by Zhang Ming, deputy director of the main campus's library, revealed that an average of 6,444 students used the library each day, and that students and teachers borrowed an average of 10 books in 2018.

In the 15th Yue Jiang lecture on the topic Man Should Guess Heaven's Decree and Good Poems Are Needed on Earth, Peng Yuping -- a Chang Jiang Scholar, dean of the Chinese department at Sun Yat-sen University, who appears  on CCTV' s Lecture Room, shared his reading of Chinese classics.

In the morning, the ink painting and calligraphy works donation ceremony and the opening ceremony of the JNU Book Festival were held in the south campus library. Prof. Zhu Guiming, a calligrapher who is dean of Fine Art Department in JNU's College  of Art, said the donated works could be placed in the library for students to read and appreciate in their spare time, helping them enhance their understanding of traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy and improve their artistic accomplishments.

The monthlong party and festival included programs for reading, sharing and appreciating works, such as New Beacon of Detective Fiction: Interpretation of Keigo Higashino's Novels: Music and the City and Reading Tao Te Ching. Nine e-resource promotion and training events were organized, with the goal of constructing a healthy campus cultural atmosphere for enjoying reading.
