The Guangdong Youth May 4 Medal has been awarded to 27 individuals and 13 collectives by the China Communist Youth League Committee of Guangdong and the Guangdong Youth Federation. Prof. Fang Junbin of JNU's School of Science and Technology and Prof. Liu Tao of the School of Journalism and Communication won individual awards.
Fang is a doctoral supervisor and deputy director of Guangdong Province Visible Light Communication Engineering Technology Research Center and the Guangzhou Key Laboratory of Visible Light Communication Engineering Technology. He is engaged mainly in cutting-edge technology research on new LED visible light communication and quantum secure communication. He has presided over three national-level projects and five provincial-level projects, obtained 12 authorized patents and published more than 60 academic papers.
Liu, engaged mainly in environmental communication and communication rhetoric research, is the deputy dean and a doctoral tutor of the College of Journalism and Communication. He is a chief expert in major projects of the National Social Science Fund, the Changjiang Young Scholars and the Brilliant Young Talent in the 10,000 Talents Program of China. Liu's awards have included the Ministry of Education’s Huo Yingdong Young Teacher Award and its fund and first prize in the National College Young Teacher Teaching Competition.

The May 4 Special Theme Day commemorated the 100th anniversary of the May 4th Movement. It was jointly held on April 29 by Guangdong Provincial Committee, the Guangzhou Municipal Committee and the Yuexiu District Committee of the Communist Youth League in Guangzhou Heroes Square, where the medal winners were honored.
