A research group led by Lai Sumei, deputy director of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the National League for Democracy (NLD), and Nu Lishu, vice chairman of the NLD's Grass-Roots Committee at JNU, conducted a research project titled Shantou and a New Economic Growth Pole in Shantou, Guangdong, from April 19 to 21. The research, focused on industrial cities, universities, cultural industries, etc., to learn about the city's scientific and technological innovations, achievement transformation, talent cultivation and industrial development. It aimed to explore multiple paths to promote Shantou's economic and social development and its urban-rural integration and development, and to provide a new scheme for advancing the development of eastern Guangdong.

The research group visited the innovation park and had a discussion with representatives of the manager of the industrial city in Haojiang District. Its members explored such topics as attracting enterprises, better serving those enterprises and blazing new trails in profit models.

At Shantou University, it visited the library and Perstare College, primarily an art school.
The research group also visited the South Australia General Army Office, built in the Ming dynasty, which was a critical position for national defense on the southeast coast in the Ming and Qing dynasties.
