The launching and feasibility assessment meeting of a national key research-and-development project led by JNU Prof. Zhang Ronghua was held in Guangzhou on April 13. The project is titled Demonstration Research on Early Identification, Intervention and Integrated Service Technology of Geriatric Diseases in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for Geriatric Diseases.”
Zhang introduced the project's overall design, research content and expected results, focusing on the construction of a health network based on an information platform and key technologies. Stressing the project leader responsibility system coordinated by the chief scientist, he said project team members should report on its progress to the person in charge and strengthen the exchange of information and technology to ensure successful completion of the project.

The project is jointly implemented by JNU and 20 medical, health or information technology research institutes, including Xiyuan Hospital CACMS, Guangdong Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University. The program gives full play to the characteristics of TCM's simplicity, convenience, effectiveness and inexpensiveness; follows the rule of development in the health fields; and insists on giving priority to prevention, combining it with treatment and paying equal attention to traditional Chinese and Western medicine. This principle promotes two goals: the transformation of health services for the elderly from extensive development of scale expansion to green intensive development with improved quality and benefits; and the establishment of a brand-new concept and program of health management for the elderly.
