JNU's College of Liberal Arts held a seminar and memorial meeting in honor of the late Prof. Deng Qiaobin on April 6. A JNU delegation consisting of Deputy Party Secretary Xia Quan; Cheng Guofu, dean of the College of Liberal Arts; and Library Director Shi Xiaojun attended the meeting, hosted by Sheng Yongsheng, secretary of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature.
More than 50 people attended, including Deng's colleagues from the College of Liberal Arts; his students from all over the country; and academic colleagues from Macao University, South-Central University for Nationalities, Sun Yat-Sen University, South China Normal University, Guangzhou University, Guangdong University of Education, Hebei University, Shanghai University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Xiangtan University.
Deng, a JNU distinguished professor, died in Shanghai on Jan. 30, 2018. In his honor, The Memorial Collection for Deng Qiaobin, jointly composed by the College of Liberal Arts and Deng's students, was released at the meeting.
A pioneer in the discipline of ancient literature, Deng came to JNU in 2002 from South China Normal University. Later, he led JNU's successful application to offer a doctoral program in ancient literature in 2003, laying a solid foundation for the Department of Chinese Language and Literature to offer a first-level doctoral discipline.
On behalf of the JNU Party Committee, Xia expressed appreciation for Deng's outstanding academic contributions and to JNU's construction of the Chinese literature discipline. He described Deng as a dedicated scholar and a respectable teacher.
Cheng comprehensively discussed Deng's academic contributions, including his publication of academic works and papers, social science projects, prizes, talent-training and discipline construction. He also said that JNU's research team in ancient literature would perpetuate Deng's legacy and create greater achievements on the solid foundation of previous scholars.
At the meeting, Shi awarded Liu Xinghui, representing Deng's students, a donation certificate for Deng's collected academic books, which they donated to JNU's library. He said JNU would make good use of the books.
