During the meeting, the federation's chairman, Prof. Almino Cardoso Ramos, announced that Prof. Wang Cunchuan of JNU's First Affiliated Hospital had been elected chairman-designate of the Asia-Pacific chapter and would officially take up the chairmanship in two years. He is the first chairman from mainland China since the organization was founded in 2008.
Wang said he would concentrate on minimally invasive weight-loss surgery to help more people recover from obesity and promote the establishment of weight-loss surgery norms and the steady development in the field.
Elected every two years, the chairman-designate must be the most authoritative professor in the weight-loss field in his country, the chairman of the domestic authoritative organization, and the executive member of the IFSO Asia-Pacific region. Wang's election means Chinese efforts on obesity and metabolic surgery have gained international recognition and will continue to expand the global influence of Chinese medical practitioners in this field.
The Asia-Pacific branch, one of the five branches (the others are North America, South America, Europe, and Middle East and Africa), is currently chaired by Prof. Kazunori Kasama of Tohoku University in Japan.
