Yao Jianping, academician of the Royal Canadian Academy of Sciences and the Canadian Academy of Engineering, was appointed professor and honorary dean of  JNU's Institute of Photonics Technology on Jan. 18. JNU President Song Xianzhong, leaders of the relevant units, and representatives of teachers and students attended the ceremony.

Guan Baiou, dean of the Photonics Technology Research Institute, presided over the ceremony. Wang Bing, director of human resources development and management, read out the appointment notice. Song issued Yao a letter of engagement and a school emblem. Student representatives presented him with flowers.

The discipline of optical engineering has become one of the key areas of development and the fastest-growing discipline at JNU,”Song said. He added that Yao's appointment would further promote the discipline construction and lead the Research Institute of Photon Technology and Optical Engineering toward a more international, high-level direction.

The Research Institute of Photonics Technology boasts a young,energetic team of teachers with a broad international vision and has a great impact in both domestic and international academic circles,” Yao said.He said he hoped to work with all other teachers to build the discipline faster, yield more results at a high level,cultivate more talents of high-quality,and serve economic construction and social development.

After the ceremony,Yao gave an impressive report titled Microwave Photonics Technology to teachers and students.He is internationally recognized as the founder and promoter of the field of microwave photonics.He enjoys a high reputation and influence in the world.He is chief editor of the internationally renowned Journal IEEE Photonics Technology Letters,a features editor of Optics Letters,the deputy editor of Science Bulletin, and a consultant to the editorial committee of Optics Communications.He is also chairman of the Technical Committee of Microwave Photonics of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society and a member of the IEEE Photonics Society.
