A delegation led by Ivan Silva, the Peruvian consul in Guangzhou, visited JNU on Jan. 14 to discuss cooperative activities celebrating this year's 170th anniversary of the arrival of Chinese in Peru. Vice President Zhang Hong met with the delegation.
During their talk, Zhang said that in recent years JNU has been continually strengthening its people-to-people and educational exchanges with Latin American countries. He said he hoped the visit would not only enhance exchanges between JNU and Peru in higher education and culture, but also build a new vision of people-to-people exchanges between China and Latin America.
Silva said he hoped to hold celebrations with JNU recognizing its abundant experience in education of overseas Chinese and people-to-people exchanges. These celebrations, which include a photo exhibition on Chinese in Peru and exchanges on folk dances, films and food, are significant in recording the development of Chinese in Peru and consolidating friendship between people of the two countries.
JNU responded positively to his proposal. The two sides agreed to set up a communication plan, add the celebrations to the people-to-people exchanges forum and organize the thematic commemorations.
Peru has a relatively large Chinese population, most originally from cities such as Zhongshan and Jiangmen in Guangdong. JNU currently has 36 Peruvian students.
