In 2018, focusing on the idea of Big Team, Big Program, Jinan University heeded the call of the Belt and Road Initiative and contributed to the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. Consequently, JNU made historic breakthroughs in scientific research. Six national programs, including three key programs and two overseas talents exchange programs, were approved. In addition, two provincial international (regional) scientific and technological (S&T) cooperation platforms and five provincial international S&T cooperation programs were approved, totaling 16.28 million RMB.
International S&T cooperation platform
The Demonstration Base of International S&T Cooperation on Agricultural Pollution Control, Restoration and Ecological Recycling of Rural Areas, built jointly by JNU and the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, was approved as an international S&T cooperation base of Guangdong Province and funded with by 1 million RMB. The demonstration base is Guangdong's second international S&T cooperation base, after the JNU-CUHK (Chinese University of Hong Kong) joint library. The Guangdong-Hong Kong Platform for Safety on Bakery Products, built jointly by JNU and CUHK, was approved as a Guangdong-Hong Kong innovative platform and funded with 1.5 million RMB. Five JNU programs have been approved as Guangdong-Hong Kong innovative platforms.
Major projects of international scientific and technological cooperation
The Joint Design of Controllable and Participatory Sensing Network and Its Application in Smart Tourism, a project of the University of Macau and Yang Guanghua, an associate professor in JNU's Institute of the Internet of Things and Logistics Engineering, was approved as a key project of the national research and development program and international cooperation on scientific and technological innovation. It is JNU’s first project approved as a key project of the national R&D program and the first jointly funded with Macau. It is also JNU's third project approved as a specially funded project of the national R&D program and international scientific and technological cooperation.
Approved as NSFC key projects of international scientific and technological cooperation were microwave photonic fiber sensing technology, on which Prof. Guang Bai’ou of the Institute of Photonics Technology cooperates with Canada, and studies on selective inhibitors of discoidin domain receptors2(DDR2)and their biological activities, on which Prof. Ding Ke of JNU’S College of Pharmacy cooperates with the United States. The approved funds are 2.9 million RMB and 2.4 million RMB, respectively. JNU has been approved for four NSFC key projects of international scientific and technological cooperation after study on the target and mechanism of the active ingredients of Chinese traditional medicine to fight osteoporosis, on which Academician Yao Xinsheng cooperated with Japan in 2012, and the mutual regulation and molecular mechanisms between γδ T cells and intestinal flora, on which Prof. Yi Zhinan cooperated with the United States in 2014.
International scientific research team
Prof. Mohamed Khalgui (Tunisia)
Prof. Khalgui of JNU's College of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology was approved by the Talented Young Scientist Program -- the first foreign expert named to this program.
Prof. Matthias Thurer (Germany)
Prof. Thurer, who now works at JNU, received a total of 615,000 RMB in research funds from the Research Fund For International Young Scientists, by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He also received 480,000 RMB in research funds from the foundation in 2018 for his project Buffering and Flexible Research Based on Factory Physics, hosted by JNU.
