The 11th National Conference on Photonics was held in Guangzhou from Nov. 23 to 25, with 413 representatives of 98 colleges and universities, scientific research institutes, enterprises and public institutions in China and abroad attending.

The conference was co-hosted by the Chinese Optical Society's Professional Committee on Fiber Optics and Integrated Optics and its Professional Committee on High-Speed Photography and Photonics, with JNU’s Institute of Photonics Technology and Guangdong's Key Laboratory of Fiber Optic Sensing and Communication Technology organizing it.

The conference had five halls for academic reports and discussions on the themes of fiber optics and integrated optics; ultrafast photonics and micro-nano laser fabrication; biophotonics and information photonics; nanophotonics; and optoelectronic materials and devices. A total of 176 reports were presented, including 4 keynote reports, 90 invitation reports, 40 oral reports and 42 posted reports. Those invited to deliver reports were mainly Chang Jiang Scholars, National Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars winners, experts from the Thousand Talents Plan and other top scholars in China. Most of the academic achievements presented in oral reports were published in top academic journals in China and abroad, such as Nature Photonics and Advanced Materials. On the whole, the conference reports represented the highest research level in photonics in China. During the conference, all representatives had in-depth exchanges on issues including the latest progress in photonics research, development opportunities and challenges of the new discipline, and cross-discipline and discipline fusion.

Six Awards for Excellent Student Papers went to winners from the University of Science and Technology of China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, South China University of Technology, Shenzhen University and Jinan University, based on on-the-spot questions and secret ballots by the expert judging panel. The conference chairman, Prof. Zhao Wei from the Chinese Academy of Science, presented the awards and prizes at a banquet on Nov.24.
