The third International Symposium on Chinese Language and Culture Education opened at JNU's College of Chinese Language and Culture on Nov. 17. Co-organized by JNU and Huaqiao University, the symposium had the theme Similarities and Differences in Chinese Language and Culture Education Around the World. The symposium attracted 143 scholars, including nearly 30 experts from the United States, Canada, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam, as well as from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

At the opening ceremony, Xia Quan, deputy secretary of JNU's party committee, extended a warm welcome to attendees arriving at JNU in the year of the 112th anniversary of its establishment, the 60th anniversary of its reconstruction in Guangzhou, the 40th anniversary of its reopening in 1978 after the Cultural Revolution, and the 65th anniversary of the establishment of the College of Chinese Language and Culture. Xia also expressed sincere thanks to experts and scholars from China and abroad for their long-term support for Chinese language and culture education at JNU and briefly introduced the university’s school-running and Chinese language and culture education.
Prof. Shao Jinming of the College of Chinese Language and Culture, director of the editorial board of the academic quarterly Journal of College of Chinese Language and Culture, and chairman of the Guangdong Chinese Language Association, called on experts to support the journal's development to make it a brand journal of Guangdong.
Dong Peng, president of the World Chinese Language Association in Taiwan, said JNU's College of Chinese Language and Culture was the pioneer in Chinese language education in China and has talents to carry on the education of Chinese language and culture with a brilliant future.
Jia Yiming, the first dean of the college and now dean of Chinese language and culture studies at Huaqiao University, told participants about the symposium's origin. He pointed out that as the symbolic academic symposium on Chinese language and culture education for JNU and Huaqiao University, it has been held in Guangzhou and Xiamen in turn every two years to discuss the development of the field, cultivate young talents and do good work in discipline construction.
After the opening ceremony, the symposium had specially invited academic reports, group discussions and thesis seminars. Fifteen invited experts from China and overseas gave three academic reports on Nov. 17 and 18. The attendees were divided into 16 groups for thesis seminars on subjects including ontology, teaching and acquisition, teachers and textbooks, literature and culture, macro theoretical research, and comprehensive research.
