The 112th anniversary of the founding of Jinan University, as well as the 40th anniversary of JNU'S reconstruction in Guangzhou, was celebrated in Shaw Stadium on the main campus on Nov. 17. More than 4,000 people attended, including Party Secretary Lin Rupeng, President Song Xianzhong, JNU board members, official leaders from provincial and municipal government and the General Office, alumni from all over the world, media reporters, of all department heads, teachers and students. Song presided over the ceremony.

Tan Tianxing, vice minister of the United Front Work Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, expressed his congratulations. He said Jinan University had educated more than 300,000 talents from over 170 foreign countries and areas, including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, on five continents. It has played a unique role in serving the country's overall United Front Work, he said, uniting and connecting Chinese, maintaining the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and Macao, and promoting the peaceful reunification of China.

On behalf of over 60,000 teachers and students, Lin extended a warm welcome to all the leaders and guests. He said, every breakthrough by JNU is made with the support of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, the United Front, the Ministry of Education, the Guangdong provincial government and the Guangzhou municipal government, and with the help of other universities, as well as alumni at home and abroad.
On behalf of the Guangdong Education Department, Na Jia extended warm congratulations to JNU. She said that JNU had cultivated hundreds of thousands of graduates for Guangdong with high-quality education and has become an indispensable part of higher education in the province. She also said the department would continue to support JNU's construction and development, hoping that JNU will actively serve the country and Guangdong with its innovative talent training system.

Zheng said he was grateful for the solid theoretical foundation laid by four years' study at JNU. In particular, he said, its teachers' rigorous, honest and hardworking spirit that has benefited him all life.

Chen Chenzhao, class of 1982, said he had witnessed the achievements and brilliance of JNU in the new century. At the same time, he said, he sincerely hopes that, as a 112-year-old university for overseas Chinese, JNU will better play its role in spreading Chinese culture all over the world.

President Song said Oct. 17 was a festival shared by everyone involved with JNU, and alumni are welcome to return to their alma mater and spiritual home.
