Zhan described the center's origin and said he would donate his collection of linguistic materials, especially works on Chinese dialects, making his own contribution to the goal of building a double first-class university and to the development of Chinese linguistics.
Established in 1994, the Chinese Dialect Research Center was approved as a key research base of humanities and social science in Guangdong in 2008. To strengthen the system for collecting and organizing literature on dialectology, the JNU library made room on its seventh floor for the Chinese Dialect Literature and Information Center. The center now has more than 10,000 books, including those donated by Zhan and books from Chinese Dialect Research Center and the library.
