Tian Ming, an associate professor in JNU's School of Marxism, has won first prize in the ideological and political course group in the fourth National College Youth Teacher Teaching Competition.

Every semester, Tian revises his lessons and rewrites his teaching plan. Focusing on the knowledge points, he incorporates his fresh understanding into his lessons and presents his teaching in a new way.
All JNU students from different schools take the course in ideology and politics, but science and engineering majors prefer logical interpretation, while students majoring in the arts prefer background introduction. So Tian has realized that different teaching methods should be prepared for students in different majors.
Tian attributes his ever-changing approach to two experiences. In 2015, when he was writing an academic book with his teacher and a classmate, he wrote three chapters adding up to 100,000 words, empowering him to examine his course in depth. Then, in 2016, with the trend of online teaching, he studied and repeatedly improved his course by summarizing and making a plan for how to use his research. His most difficult task was to reduce his handout for a seven- or 8-minute lesson to about 1,300 characters. That summer vacation, Tian thought about the problem. He said that the aim of his research was to enable him to have a satisfying class and that when sufficiently prepared,he could have confidence in his lecture. Tian’s course has been praised by many students and made a hit on the Internet after becoming famous at JNU.
Although Tian's class is still very difficult for students, he does not intend to change anything about it. 'Brain-burning' is just what I want, he said. Students' thinking skills will be improved in the course of learning.'
Q&A
Do you particularly enjoy teaching?
Tian: I have enjoyed being a teacher. It is a happy thing. I very much like the feeling of being a teacher. I have benefited a lot from communicating with my students.
You were rated as one of the most popular teachers by the students. What is the reason for your popularity?
Tian: I like my students very much, and I respect them. Usually I don't embarrass my students, even if they make me angry. I believe they have their reasons.
Can your teaching method be popularized?
Tian: Yes, I think the whole concept can be popularized completely. It is just like practicing martial arts. On the one hand, we should pay attention to the mind method, depending on the amount of teachers' input. On the other hand, we should systematically analyze students and understand them.
