The number of major projects of Jinan University (JNU) funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) has doubled over last year, according to the application examination results released on Aug 16. It is a milestone in JNU’s construction as a high-level and Double First-Class University.
These are the funded projects:
The project of Prof. Li Baojun's team from the Institute of Nanophotonics won support as a National Major Research Project of Scientific Research Instrument, with direct funding of 5.68 million yuan. This is the first time JNU has won such a project, among only three universities this year: JNU, Sun Yat-Sen University and Shenzhen University.
Two JNU projects have been admitted as projects supported by the NSFC Funds for International Cooperation and Exchange. One is the microwave photonics and fiber optic sensing technology project by the team of Guan Bo'ou, a professor in the Institute of Photonics Technology, and the team of Yao Jianping, a professor at the University of Ottawa and an academician of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and Engineering Institute of Canada. The other project is the biological evaluation of selective inhibitors targeting of discoid in domain receptor 2 (DDR2) by the team of Ding Ke, a professor in the College of Pharmacy, and the team of Rolf Brekken, a professor at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Texas. The former receives 2.44 million yuan in direct funding and the latter 2.4 million. It is the first time JNU has had two projects supported by the Funds for International Cooperation and Exchange of NSFC.
JNU has won three projects directly supported by the Key Program of the NSFC with 8.69 million yuan for the first time, with a funding rate of 30%. (The national average funding rate is 20.84 %.) It ranks in third place nationwide, tying South China University of Technology and other universities in the number of supported projects. JNU’s supported projects this year:
1) The Effect of Glial Cells on Brain Pathology in Large Animal Models of Neurodegenerative Diseases, reported by Prof. Li Xiaojiang's team from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Institute of CNS Regeneration, received direct funding of 2.93 million yuan.
2) Exploring the Biological Basis of Damp-Heat Syndrome and the Mechanism of Action of Related Prescriptions Based on Changes in Intestinal Micro-ecology, reported by Prof. Chen Xiaoyin's team from the School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, received direct funding of 2.94 million yuan.
3) Molecular Mechanism of γ δ T Cell-mediated Tumor Immunization, reported by Prof. Yin Zhinan of the Biomedical Transformation Research Institute, received 2.82 million yuan.
These are also the first projects supported by the Key Program of the NSFC in Immunology (C08), Neuroscience (C09) and Traditional Chinese medicine (H27).
