The first awards ceremony of the Zhong and Chen Yulan Research Forum was held on May 31 on JNU's Panyu campus. Zhong Cixian, the fund donor, accompanied by his wife, Xia Xiaoluan, and JNU Vice President Zhang Hong attended. After assessing applications from 54 postgraduate and Ph.D. students, the forum awarded four first prizes, nine second prizes, 16 third prizes and 20 fourth prizes. Zhang said he hoped that starting with this forum, postgraduates would contribute their wisdom to optics engineering at JNU and to enterprise in Chinese optics.

The awards come from a fund set up by Prof. Zhong and his wife, Xiaoluan, in the name of his mother, Chen Yulan, a JNU alumna. It is intended to build a platform for academic forums for postgraduates in optics and optical engineering and promote academic exchanges among graduates of the Institute of Nanophotonics, the College of Science and Engineering, and the Institute of Photonics Technology. It also promotes the comprehensive development of the discipline of optics and optical engineering, as well as personnel training.
Zhong recalled his early life in JNU and said he hoped the forum would become a better and better academic platform for mutual learning and exchange among graduate students.
