JNU holds opening ceremony of first public welfare symposium

Openness and Innovation: Establishing the Belt and Road Education and Public Welfare Community, the first Jinan Philanthropy Forum, and the opening ceremony of the Greater Bay Area (Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau) and Economic Cooperation Workshop under the Belt and Road initiative was held in JNU's Alumni Building on May 18. In attendance were Zhang Feng, vice director of the Guangdong Social Organization Administration; Liang Zhongjing, a JNU board member; Ye Huiquan, a JNU board member and chairman of Zovie Real Estate Co. Ltd; JNU President Song Xianzhong and Vice President Hong An; chairmen and secretaries-general of over 40 alumni associations from China and abroad; and school liaison officers.

Zhang, vice director of the Guangdong Social Organization Administration, pointed out in his speech that JNU, with more international students than any other university in China, has 118 alumni associations in over 170 countries, as well as Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. These active local associations play an important role in local prosperity and stability, and in the establishment and development of the Belt and Road initiative in many countries.

In the symposium, Song detailed JNU's recent achievements in education construction under the Belt and Road. Through this symposium, he said, he wished to discuss new ideas and measures of Belt and Road education for public welfare with government leaders, experts in public welfare, well-known university foundations, and alumni in China and abroad, aiming to paving the way to build a better community of Belt and Road education for public welfare.

At the symposium, Ye delivered the keynote speech, titled The Public Welfare Journey of Zovie Real Estate. He shared his sense of values, saying wealth comes from society and should be used for society. Thus, he said, people should hold a grateful heart to repay their alma mater. He also said he hoped government, corporations and universities could combine their forces, moving forward together in the journey toward public welfare.

You Ruishan, secretary-general of University Foundation Forum of China, gave a keynote speech titled Development Trends and Practices of University Foundations, analyzing the current status of university foundations in China, their relations with universities and their problems.

Tang Hao, a professor at South China Normal University and a researcher in the School of Philanthropy at Sun Yat-sen University, spoke on Policy and the Legal Environment for Philanthropy, making a clear statement on the images and trends of external development of Chinese enterprises and charities.

Liang Haiming, president of the China Silk Road iValley Research Institute, a representative of experts in the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation and a senior researcher of Institute for Advanced Study in Nanyang Technological University, spoke on The Latest Development Trend of Belt and Road. Liang proposed that in addition to establishing a theoretical system to advance the Belt and Road Initiative, alumni should pay more attention to smaller countries hoping to cooperate with China, rather than larger countries. He also recommended that alumni foster more cooperation with local government and organizations in various fields.

Wang Zeyao, director-general of the Guangdong Cheung Kong Philanthropic Foundation, spoke on Philanthropic Practice and Thinking in Light of Business Philosophy. She shared two philanthropic cases aiming at improving rural education and helping university students from poor backgrounds.

Finally, Hong spoke on Overseas Chinese Public Welfare to Advance the Belt and Road Initiative. After giving an overview of JNU, she focused on overseas Chinese public welfare typical of the Jinan University Education Foundation and establishment of the Belt and Road education and public welfare community.
