A team named Unusual from JNU's Department of Photoelectric Engineering in the College of Science and Engineeringwon the Star of Entrepreneurship Award in the Artificial Intelligence Special of the fifth Guangzhou Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition (YIEC) in the E-PARK at Tianhe Smart City on April 27.

The team consists of Zhang Yaxin, a sophomore majoring in information engineering, and Zhou Hongbiao, a junior majoring in photoelectric information science and engineering. Under the guidance of Prof. Luo Yunhao, they invented a rapid optical discriminator for antibiotic in drinks that was connected to smartphones—SPR discriminator. Compared to traditional ones, the SPR discriminator is easy to operate even if the operator has zero professional knowledge, thus facilitating its commercial promotion.

According to the E-PARK, YIEC has supported over 200,000 university students in starting their own business and developed more than 10,000 programs. Two hundred programs from several cities, including Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou, participated in the contest. The most promising of the final 20 teams will be selected for Tianhe Smart City, laying a foundation for the contestants' future entrepreneurship.
