Three JNU team projects made the Selected Team and Postdoctoral Funding List in the 2017 Pearl River Recruitment Program of Talents, published by the Guangdong Province Leading Group Office of Talent Work (Guangdong Province Leading Group Office of Talent Work〔2018〕No. 1). Led by Prof. Ye Wencai of JNU's College of Pharmacy, a research team on innovative medicine originated from Chinese traditional medicine and natural medicine received 10 million RMB in local innovative research team funding for the first time. A pathogenic microbiology team led by Prof. Wu Jianguo of JNU's Institute of Pathogenic Microbiology and a team researching the connection between stem cell development and senility, led by Prof. Lan Yu of JNU's Faculty of Medical Science, each received 20 million RMB in innovation and startup business funding.

Since the initiation of high-level university construction in 2017, nine JNU teams, led by those three professors and Profs. Liao Huaxin, Liu Fenyong, Ma Jianfeng, Shao Min, Chen Da and Li Xiangping have received funding from the innovative research team of the Pearl River Recruitment Program of Talents. They have also received a total of 180 trillion RMB from provincial funds.

The Pearl River Recruitment Program of Talents is a talent introduction program of whole team building pioneered by Guangdong. It facilitates the introduction of world-class innovation and entrepreneurship teams and leading talents, as well as post-doctoral researchers from China and overseas. Since 2009, 850 million RMB have been invested each year. Guangdong Province subsidizes the team with 10 million to 100 million RMB, including 6 million for the leading talents and 500,000 for postdoctoral fellows. In 2017, the Local Innovative Research Team category was established with stable funding to support local high-level scientific research teams in carrying out basic research.
