The South China (Guangzhou) Intellectual Property Talent Base and the JNU Intellectual Property Research Institute were inaugurated on JNU's Panyu Campus on March 31. In attendance were Guangzhou Deputy Mayor Li Ming; Ma Xianmin, director general of Guangdong Intellectual Property Office; Deng Baoyouman, director general of the Guangzhou Intellectual Property Office; JNU Party Secretary Lin Rupeng; JNU President Song Xianzhong; Vice Presidents Rao Min and Zhang Ronghua; Zhang Zhonghui, vice chairman of the Guangdong Law Society; Liu Chuntian, chairman of the China Intellectual Property Law Research Association; Zhang Ping, deputy executive dean of Peking University Intellectual Property College; Lawrence Lessig, honorary dean of the JNU Intellectual Property Research Institute; and Xu Xuan, dean of JNU Intellectual Property Research Institute. They jointly laid the foundation for the building of Guangzhou Intellectual Property Talent Base.
At the inauguration, Lin introduced the basic situation of the Guangzhou Intellectual Property Talent Base and the JNU Intellectual Property Research Institute. In 2015, JNU and the Guangzhou Municipal Government signed an agreement to build the Guangzhou Intellectual Property Talent Base. Under the agreement, JNU would receive 50 million RMB each from the municipal and Guangdong governments. In cooperation with Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, JNU raised additional funds and united with Peking University to promote the 230 million RMB Guangzhou Intellectual Property Base project.

The Intellectual Property Research Institute sincerely invited Professor Lawrence Lessig to be its honorary dean. Lessig gave an academic report titled The Lessons of Intellectual Property, covering experience and lessons on intellectual property rights.
The institute also hired 18 outstanding experts as JNU honorary professors, visiting professors, chair professors and visiting research fellows. They included An Shoulian, vice president of Harvard Law School; Wu Handong, former president of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law; Li Yahong of the University of Hong Kong; and Raymond Lam, deputy director of the City University of Hong Kong's law school.
