Zhang said he expected Mai to support the discipline construction of materials science and engineering at JNU. He also said he hoped the teachers and students in the Institute of Advanced Wear and Corrosion Resistant and Functional Materials can gain more knowledge and experience from Mai so as to contribute more to improving JNU's scientific research level.
Mai then gave a report titled My Research Journey: From Hong Kong to Sydney, in which he shared his own struggles as a child from an ordinary family and detailed the directions he had taken in scientific research. He also stressed the principles of scientific research and made suggestions on choosing research direction and writing good scientific research papers. After the report, he answered the questions from the teachers and students and gave them advice.
Mai, a world-renowned expert in materials science and dynamics, is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society, the European Academy of Sciences, the Australian Academy of Sciences and the Australian Academy of Engineering. He is well-known for his significant contribution to the fields of fracture and fatigue of materials and construction; preparation, evaluation and simulation of advanced composite materials; and preparation, evaluation and optimizing of nano-materials. The winner of a dozen major international awards, he was named one of the world's most influential materials scientists by ISIHighlyCited.Com.
