Wei said the film's storyline revealed how ordinary Chinese people played important roles in building such an amazing China. The film is divided into two parts, The first half shows brilliant achievements in all walks of life: remarkable super projects such as bridges, roads, automobiles, ports and website, as well as great scientific achievements leading the Chinese to a new era, including the world's largest radio telescope, FAST, in Southwest China's Guizhou Province; the world's largest offshore drilling rig, Blue Whale 2; maglev train research; and 5G mobile technology. The second half tells the stories of ordinary people who worked hard for these splendid projects, including those working to alleviate poverty in a grass-roots unit; three generations planning the world’s largest plantation; health administrators doing a good job in providing health examination services to urban and rural residents; and soldiers safeguarding China's security.
Amazing China is a joint production of CCTV and China Film Co., Ltd. The two teams, which started making the film last year, traveled across China from north to south, east to west, filming more than 1,000 hours of footage.
Wei graduated from the Beijing Film Academy's Department of Literature with a master's degree in film history in 2006. That same year, he became a teacher in the Film and Television Department of JNU’s College of Art.
Wei mainly teaches courses in audio-visual language, contemporary film, and directing and writing for film and TV. He has always believed that teachers should not only teach students knowledge, but also teach them how to learn.
He expressed his appreciation and gratitude to JNU, saying, JNU has offered generous assistance and concern for young teachers like me. The college has provided Wei with money, equipment and other support in the filmmaking process, and also helped him participate in film festivals held in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Paris Busan, and South Korea.
He has made four other films, which he says reveal his inner core:Yellowstone Road, The Man on the Yangtze River, Far Away and The Fairy Tale of the World.
In face of all the fame and glory that Amazing China has brought, Wei remains peaceful and calm. Both occupations, teacher and movie director, value a sense of responsibility and mission, he said. Teachers need to provide students with the best education, while directors are supposed to show the audiences the best films.
