JNU professor wins State Science and Technology Advancement Award

President Xi Jinping and other leaders, including Premier Li Keqiang, Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli and Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee's Political Bureau, presented certificates to representatives of award-winners at the National Science and Technology Award Conference in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Jan 8. The project Research and Application of Triterpene and Triterpenoidal Saponins in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Natural Medicine, by a scientific team led by JNU Prof. Ye Wencai, won second prize in the 2017 National Scientific and Technological Advancement Awards. Ye attended award ceremony on behalf of the team.

This project systematically researched the chemical constituents, pharmacological activity and mechanism of action of triterpene and triterpenoidal saponins in more than 60 traditional Chinese medicines and natural medicines. It made innovative achievements in many aspects, including the discovery of triterpene and triterpenoidal saponins; the construction of separation and identification methodology; the discovery of new drugs’ leading compound and research and development in innovative medicine; the quality standard of traditional Chinese medicine; and the secondary development of effective traditional Chinese patent medicines.
The project, led by JNU, collaborated with units at China Pharmaceutical University, Livzon (Group) Limin Pharmaceutical Factory and GKH Pharmaceutical Ltd. It is regarded as an example of combined efforts in basic research for application and industrial application. It also symbolizes university-industry cooperation and collaborative innovation, as well as significant progress made by the construction of the Double First-Class discipline of biomedical science and technology.
The project’s findings were selected as one of China's Top 10 Medical Advances for 2017.
