Jiang Lei, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, spoke on “Original Scientific Research and Scientific Life by Learning From Nature” as part of the JNU Academic Lecture Series and the 2017 JNU keynote lecture on scientific and technological work. The lecture and series on Dec. 11 were co-sponsored by the secretariat of JNU's academic committee, the Office of Scientific Research and Development, and the College of Chemistry and Materials Science.
In the lecture Jiang elaborated on how to select a research topic, develop original scientific research and learn to live scientifically.
Focusing on ancient Chinese philosophy and specific scientific research, Jiang pointed out that ancient Chinese philosophy has provided the methodology of scientific topic selection, namely learning from nature and the principles of yin and yang. He added: The core of scientific research lies in topic selection, and the essence of the topic is to be creative. Therefore scientific research should not only grasp the core but also try to be more innovative. On scientific research, he spoke mainly about how to propose a genuine, original topic and how to make unique contributions. On innovation, he said the process of scientific research was to seize opportunity while taking action to pursue unpredictability under existing patterns.
As an important program of the JNU Academic Committee, the JNU Academic Lecture Series aims to strengthen the construction of academic committee and give professors' academic capacity full play in promoting academic development and exchanges.
