A special training group from Jinan University, consisting of backbone teachers of science and engineering, travelled to the UK from Nov. 26 to Dec. 9 for 14 days of training to enhance their capacity for discipline construction. The purpose of the training was to speed up discipline construction and transform JNU's achievements in science and engineering. Selected through voluntary application and careful screening, the group consisted of 13 people, including backbone teachers from nine colleges, research institutes and departments from relevant colleges.

Professors from other eight universities -- University College London, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Reading, Coventry University, the University of West London, Herriot-Watt University, Edinburgh Napier University and the University of Westminster -- were also invited to the training program. Also present were experts from the British Cabinet Office and Higher Education Funding Council for England. They made an overall introduction and led an in-depth discussion of Britain's higher education system, strategies for universities to develop science and technology, talent training, evaluation and assessment for professors, successful transition of the scientific research fruits, use of funds and assessment of the quality of scientific research and education by the British government. Some members of the JNU training group discussed expanding international exchanges and cooperation with representatives of the other universities. 

The training program, an important part of the 2017 JNU Sci-Technology Conference, aims to help backbone teachers of science and engineering learn advanced ideas and practices from overseas universities in cultivating talents. It is also hoped that the teachers, by learning from the experience from overseas universities in discipline construction and achievement transformation, will be on the leading edge of reform in international higher education and technological innovation, improving their capacity in scientific research innovation and achievement transformation.
