JNU’s Institute for Environmental and Climate Research held the fifth International Symposium on Improving Air Quality in the Rapid Developing Regions at Guangzhou from Nov. 16 to 19. More than 700 scholars from China and over 10 countries and regions, including the United States, Britain, Germany, Australia, Italy, Canada, Finland, Sweden and Singapore, attended.
They included seven academicians: Hao Jiming, Liu Wenqing, Zhang Yuanhang and He Kebin of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; An Zhizheng and Tao Shu of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and Liu Shaochen of Academia Sinica in Taiwan.
With the theme The Past, Present and Future of Air Pollution Prevention and Control in China, the conference held four forums: the Clean Air High-End Forum of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area; the International Forum on Urban Air Quality Management; the Face-to-Face Forum between Academicians and Young Scholars; and the Chief Editor Forum. Also presented were 16 keynote reports and 24 venue reports. A total of 184 participants delivered speeches and shared their latest research findings, as well as insights and thoughts on the prevention and control of air pollution and continuing improvement of air quality.

The participants made their suggestions on Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area planning from the aspects of pollution prevention and control, climate change, clean production, green finance, green power and public health. They also agreed on the concept of “the Green Development Alliance in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area” proposed by JNU Vice President Song Xianzhong. They said establishing the alliance would be conducive to bringing together international and domestic research resources and conducting interdisciplinary, cross-sector and trans-regional cooperation. The goal is to make the alliance an important participant, contributor and leader in the ecological construction of the Greater Bay Area, promoting the spirit of green responsibility, conservation and cycle awareness, and low-carbon green philosophy.
