JNU's Center for Latin America Studies was officially established on Nov. 11. The center focuses on scientific research, consultation on decisions, talent cultivation and international exchange as required by the Ministry of Education's Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges to make it South China's most important research center in the field. Lin Rupeng, Secretary of JNU’s Party Committee, and 60 others attended the establishing ceremony.

JNU and Hengqin New Area jointly established the Center for Latin America Studies last year as the first center in China established by a local government and a university. The opening ceremony was held on Aug, 30, 2016, and Eduardo Frei, former president of Chile, was named an honorary professor at JNU. On Nov. 10 the center held the One Belt and One Road Initiative and China-LAC Cultural Exchange International Symposium in Hengqin New Area, attended by scholars and experts from Argentina, Chile, Cuba, the United States and China.
