JNU's president, vice president and chairman of the labor union on Sept. 30 decided to set up the Institute for Economic and Social Research as a pilot program of JNU's comprehensive reform demonstration zone. The autonomous right of professional title evaluation and appointment was delegated to the institute, giving it more freedom in personnel, student training and think-tank construction.
The institute plans to recruit 50 to 80 full-time teachers, 90 percent of them with Ph.D.s, in the next five years, mainly in applied economics. To build a team of distinguished professors with international influence, the institute sends students to the top 50 schools in the world for further study. Using data research, the institute plans to create a new type of think tank, internationally advanced, first-class domestically and a leader in South China.
