JNU's joint laboratory for international cooperation to modernize and innovate in Chinese medicine was one of the 24 projects nationwide approved in the Ministry of Education's recent notice establishing such laboratories. They are a significant strategic plan implemented by the ministry to solve international scientific problems and meet vital domestic demands. They will serve as a strategic pillar to promote quality higher education and establish world-class universities and first-class disciplines.
The laboratory is supported by JNU's 985 Project of National Innovative Platform of Dominant Discipline for innovation in drug research and the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of the Chinese Herb Pharmacodynamic Foundation and Innovative Drugs. Its major research fields include natural pharmaceutical chemistry, prescription of herbal medicinal compounds and innovative medicine.
The laboratory aims to carry out research on high-level interaction of active ingredients and biological activity of traditional Chinese medicine; the material basis of traditional Chinese medicine and its mechanism of action; and innovative drug research and development. It will collaborate with overseas research teams including the anticancer drug research team of the Maurice Wilkins Center in New Zealand; the research team on pharmacodynamic substances and mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine at Kitasato University in Japan; and the research team on key techniques for screening important active components of Chinese herbs and natural products at the University of Liege in Belgium.
To date, 22 technological platforms at the provincial level or above have been set up at JNU this year, including one Guangdong key laboratory, one Guangdong and Hong Kong innovation platform, three Guangzhou key laboratories and 16 Guangdong engineering centers.
