The new Jinan University-University of Birmingham Joint Institute at Jinan University welcomed its first cohort of freshmen in September.
The institute aims to give students a quality British education with an international outlook. Teachers from the University of Birmingham account for one-third of the institute's faculty.
Nick Webber, the British dean of the institute, said it would primarily pay attention to students' experience by creating a British problem-based learning environment that fully motivates students and fosters their ability to think independently. "The nature of education is to develop one's potential, shape all-round competence and enhance self-discipline," he said. "We will be delighted to see that we can help students have a proper understanding of themselves, which is also my personal philosophy."

Webber also said he hoped that with the effort of faculty members, the institute will nurture talents for the global community. "I will always be proud of the JNU-Birmingham Institute," he said, "and there is a bright and promising future for the students!"
