Prof. Zhang Ning of JNU’s School of Economics has published his research Carbon footprint of China’s belt and road as the first author in the Letters section of Science. The co-authors are Liu Zhu, JNU visiting chair professor and University of East Angelia professor; Zheng Xuemei, associate professor at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu; and Xue Jinjun, a professor at Nagoya University in Japan. The research is JNU’s first achievement in economics and management published in a regular issue of Science.
Science also published related papers introducing China’s One Belt and One Road Initiative. Zhang’s research suggested that, as the world pays tribute to the initiative’s contribution to the global economy, the influence of its carbon footprint cannot be ignored. Based on this idea, the research group made an in-depth analysis of several mechanisms possibly increasing carbon dioxide emission of China and countries along the Belt and Road. It proposed enhancing infrastructure construction of the Belt and Road by using environmentally friendly high-tech and low-carbon economic means, and provided some policy suggestions to build a green, clean Belt and Road.
Zhang, a professor and doctoral supervisor in JNU’s School of Economics and a Pearl River Young Scholar, studies management of sustainable development. He has published more than 60 papers in Nature-Climate Change and other top economics journals, of which two made the ESI Hot Papers list and 12 were chosen as ESI Highly Cited Papers. He serves on the editorial advisory boards of several SSCI journals and leads a number of national research subjects. Several of his research reports have led to government decisions.
