The kickoff meeting of the research project on the cause of air pollution and control techniques in the 2017 National Key Research Program of China was held in Guangzhou on Sept. 8. The research project, titled "The Key Atmospheric Processes Affecting Regional Emission and Feedback to Disposition," is chaired by Prof. Wang Xuemei of JNU's Institute for Environmental and Climate Research. Twenty domestic experts on the atmospheric environment attended the meeting, and Gong Shanling, an internationally renowned expert on atmospheric chemistry and the numerical model of atmospheric aerosol, was appointed to lead the project's team of experts.

This project is the only approved National Key Research and Development project that connects the atmosphere and the Earth's surface, a great challenge in scientific research. Nevertheless, the project is aimed at improving the quantitative level of regional emission and sedimentation. Based in eastern China, it not only focuses on crucial scientific issues like the dry deposition and cloud removal mechanism, but also evaluates the relationship between regional emission and sedimentation and its potential ecological risks. The research is expected to lead to a breakthrough in dealing with air pollution in China.
