Prof. Yan Yuezhen of the College of Liberal Arts published her academic paper "Artifacts as Ritual: With a Focus on Early Chinese Writing" in the July issue of Social Science in China.
This paper illustrates artifacts in performance, naming activities and construction of cultural order, narrating and summarizing their social and cultural functions. It contends that the artifacts of ancient Chinese society are not static, and that researchers can find a social ideology and historical narrative paradigm in their existence.
Yan is an expert on the history of Chinese literary criticism, comparative poetics and overseas sinology. She was selected as one of the young scholars of the 2016 Changjiang Scholars Program.
First published in 1980, Social Science in China is a comprehensive journal directly under the administration of Chinese Academy of Social Science. Known as China's top journal in the humanities and social sciences, it publishes the latest and most significant research findings in the field.
