A total of 9.4 million Chinese high school students took the 2017 national college entrance examination on June 7 and 8. Since this was the 40th anniversary of the examination’s restoration, a reporter from Ta Kung Pao came to Jinan University, a paramount school for overseas Chinese students, and investigated its student recruitment over the 40 years.
JNU received a notice of school resumption in February 1978 and reopened that October with the generous support of celebrities from Hong Kong and Macao, who accounted for 70% of its board and widely reported JNU's overseas recruitment information in news media at home and abroad. JNU received applications from more than 800 overseas students that year and enrolled 309 students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
JNU was ordered to set up the School of Medicine in 1978, the first time a comprehensive university on the mainland had set up a medical school. At that time, Hong Kong and Macao students enthusiastically applied to the School of Medicine and received over 80 percent of total admission offers. To date, Hong Kong and Macao students have been the largest group of applicants to the school. In Macau, JNU graduates now account for more than 70 percent of licensed practitioners.
(Soon after the college entrance examination was restored in 1977, JNU reopened and enrolled 309 students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas with support from Hong Kong and Macao celebrities.)
