JNU President Hu Jun signed an education cooperation agreement with the Vice-Principal Tim Jones of the University of Birmingham on June 12. Hu Chunhua, a member of the Communist Party's Politburo standing committee and the party secretary of Guangdong province, witnessed the process during his visit to Birmingham at the invitation of Birmingham government.

Hu also visited the School of Mathematics and discussed the staff training and talent development with staff members at the JNU-University of Birmingham Joint Institute. Birmingham’s principal, David Eastwood, said that the joint institute was a significant step in the university's globalization strategy, and that the university would give full support to guarantee its education quality.

When meeting with the officials of Birmingham's, Hu Chunhua pointed out that Guangzhou and Birmingham are sister cities. They continue to expand and deepen cooperation and communication on an ever-improving foundation. Hu hoped to strengthen cooperation further in technological innovation, finance and education.

Also at the signing ceremony were Liu Xiaoming, Chinese Ambassador to the UK; Guangzhou Mayor Wen Guohui; Birmingham Mayor John Clancy; and Matthew Rous, British consul general in Guangzhou.
