The JNU Postgraduate Student Education Conference 2017, held March 26 and 27 in the Auditorium, centered on how to improve postgraduate students’ education at Jinan University. President Hu Jun reported on work in the last year to improve the quality of postgraduate education and insure JNU's autonomy as an academic degree-awarding unit. Hu also made a brief statement about the development of postgraduate education at JNU in the last 10 years.

In that time, Hu said, Jinan University has achieved great progress mainly in the following aspects: the number of first-level doctoral students is 2.5 times as high as 10 years before, while the number of master’s students has doubled in that time.  In 2012 more than 1,000 students applied to Jinan University for admission. By 2017 the number of postgraduate applicants had doubled, and the number of supervisors for postgraduates doubled in recent decade as well. Supervisors for postgraduates and doctoral candidates, composed of highly educated talents, have increased sixfold.

Hu pointed out that Jinan University had achieved two great transformations in the structure and type of postgraduate students'cultivation. One is an integration of arts and sciences, with the number of doctoral and master's programs in science rising to account about 50% and 60% respectively of all doctor programs.  And the university is no longer centered on solely academic degrees, but on academic and professional degrees equally, with 25 professional degrees in economics, law, pedagogy, literature, engineering, medicine and management established. 

At the conference, eight relevant documents were discussed in groups, including "Suggestions on the Postgraduate Cultivation System Targeted to Independent Degrees," "Approach to Postgraduates' Enrollment Quota Allocation," "Postgraduate Instructor Management" and "Postgraduate Training Base Management."
The proposed independent degree reform is a far-reaching exploration and practice for future reform of the management system in the university and its schools.

Eight schools were recognized at the meeting for outstanding contributions to postgraduate research and education during the 11th and 12th Five-Year Plans: the School of Economics, the School of Liberal Arts, the School of Pharmacy, the First Clinical Medical School, the School of International Relations, the School of Information Science and Technology, the Industrial Economics School, and the Chinese Education School.
