JNU launched the Research Academy of Cultural Heritage and Creative Industry (RACHCI) on May 19 and announced the employment of its director, Chen Ping, vice president of UNESCO's International Organization of Folk Art (IOV). Guests at the launch ceremony included Tan Tianxing and Li Guohong, deputy directors of the State Council's Overseas Chinese Affairs Office; JNU President Hu Jun; Yang Gu, CEO and chief editor of Guangming Online; Xia Xhunping, vice president of the China News Service; and Liang Haiming, chairman of the China Silk Road iValley Research Institute.

"Cultural heritage is an identification and representation of the Chinese nation, the inheritance of which plays an important role in enhancing its cultural confidence and soft power," Tan said in his address. "By establishing RACHCI, JNU will promote its social function as a university for overseas Chinese and research in the cultural heritage and creative industry, and contribute to the Belt and Road Initiative."

Hu said JNU has been committed to inheriting and passing on excellent traditional Chinese culture. The launch of RACHCI is one of the new measures the university has taken to enhance the nation＇s cultural confidence and soft power. It will further integrate resources to shoulder the responsibility of cultural heritage and innovation as a higher education institution.

Chen has devoted herself to exploring and protecting folk arts and cultural heritage all over the world in the last 10 years, greatly contributing to exchanges among Chinese people at home and abroad. She said she hoped to raise China’s voice in the international cultural studies community by bringing professional experts together at JNU and organizing advanced forums for sustainable development of cultural heritage.
