To celebrate the 20th-anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China, JNU held the Hong Kong Cultural Festival on the Panyu campus on May 13. With the 22 booths constituting a "subway," the festival highlighted the city's development in economy, society and culture in the last 20 years. School's bands and clubs performing at the festival included the Remember Band, the Favor a Cappella Band and the Storm Martial Arts Group. Representatives of the Hong Kong Student Union at JNU and other universities also participated.
JNU Vice President Rao Min and Fang Xiangdong, a director in the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong, attended the opening ceremony. During their keynote speeches, Rao expressed the hope that Hong Kong students at JNU could promote exchange between students in Hong Kong and Guangdong and contribute to the two regions' mutual development. Fang called upon the Hong Kong students at JNU to enhance their abilities, devoting themselves to the two regions' cooperation.
Rao presented silk banners to the guests from the Liaison Office and JNU alumni association in Hong Kong, giving credit to their effort.
JNU also organized an essay contest previously on the theme "My School Life in Mainland China," in which 427 Hong Kong students participated.
