Giorgi Toloraya, vice president of the Russian Foundation for World Peace, visited JNU on May 3, meeting with JNU Party Secretary Lin Rupeng.
Toloraya reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin had signed a decree establishing the foundation as a non-governmental organization under the management of the Russian Foreign Ministry and the Federal Academy of Sciences. He said the foundation would like to cooperate with JNU and gave preliminary approval to set up a Russian Reading Room at JNU. If the contract is signed, he said, Russia will provide books regularly and work to set up a Russian Center in the future.
Toloraya, a Professor of Orientalism at the University of International Relations directly under the Russian Foreign Ministry, worked as the economic expert for the Trade Development Council of the Soviet Union in North Korea. He served as Russian consul general in Australia and minister counselor for Russia in both North Korea and South Korea. He was also the Russian Federation Foreign Ministry's first Asia director. Toloraya received that ministry’s emergency and plenipotentiary award in 1995 and was awarded the Russian Federation Presidential Award by Putin in both 2001 and 2008.
