Liu Tao, born in Qingyang, Gansu province, in December 1981, is a professor and doctoral supervisor in JNU's School of Journalism and Communication. Liu has won second prize in the Outstanding Achievement Awards in Humanities and Social Sciences set up by the Ministry of Education; first prize in the 24th Chinese Journalism Awards; and first prize in the 3rd Young Teachers'Classroom Teaching Competition.

"It is perhaps predestination for me to be a teacher," Liu says with mixed feelings. To be a qualified teacher, he absorbs himself in both teaching and scientific research. Liu Tao always tells students:"Accumulating knowledge is for enriching life."

In the preface to Liu's Environmental Communication: Discourse, Rhetoric and Politics, his supervisor, Prof. Zhou Xing, writes: "It is the first book focusing on environmental communication. When I was reading through it, Liu's assiduous study came to my mind. He is a promising young man showing concern for social issues and dedicated to solving them." Working in investigative journalism at CCTV 10 years ago, he developed a habit of concerning himself with social issues and reflecting on them. As a signed columnist in China Education Daily, Liu has published over 200 commentaries, one of which, "Making school buildings asylums," won first prize in the Chinese Journalism Awards in 2014.
