Zhang Jianguo, a renowned performing artist in Peking opera, was invited by the Office of Students and JNU's College of Humanities along with the Zhuhai Huafa Grand Theater to give lectures on March 28 for Jinanese, especially for those zealous fans of Chinese traditional culture on the Zhuhai Campus.
Zhang, a leading figure in Peking opera as a famous Laosheng (the old gentleman in Chinese operas) performer, is a national first-class actor, head of Group Three of the China National Peking Opera Company, and president of the Hong Kong Peking Opera Theater. He has won the Best Performance Award in the 4th China Peking Opera Festival, the Plum Blossom Award of Chinese Drama, the Mei Lanfang Gold Award and other honors. Zhang began the lecture with his apprentice days, sharing experiences from his career and giving a detailed introduction to Peking Opera.
JNU's College of Humanities carries out special programs for students from Hong Kong and Macao to deepen their understanding on the quintessence of Chinese art and instill a sense of responsibility and mission to inherit the Chinese culture. The National Essence Campus program that brought Zhang to JNU is one of those projects.
