Prof. Tang Shuze, dean of JNU's International School, won the Outstanding Teacher Award of Guangdong Province in 2015. The nearly 60-year-old professor and doctoral tutor of JNU students from all over the world led the school to establish the major in food quality and safety, in which all lectures are given in English, in 2003.

In more than 30 years of teaching, Prof. Tang has achieved remarkable results in scientific research. He has published two textbooks, one translated work and more than 20 academic papers in SCI journals of food science, including Meat Science and the International Journal of Food Science and Technology.

In 1987, Prof. Tang was selected to study at the University of Alberta and the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. He then studied at Kasetsart University in Thailand from 1991 to 1992 and received his doctorate in food science from University College Cork in 2000.

For 10 years Prof. Tang has offered the public elective course The Modern Food Nutrition and Safety, which has been well received by JNU students. Talking about his course, Tang said, Since I focus on food processing, I would first of all list the examples of how food should be processed, and then discuss the solutions with the students, which is my teaching method. A student who has taken the course has praised it, saying, Influenced by the course of Prof. Tang, we would all eat ‘Tang Breakfast,' which is nutritious and healthy. The so-called Tang Breakfast is made by mixing cereal, milk, egg and honey, as recommended by Professor Tang in the class.

When Prof. Tang was named dean of the International School in 2005, he made the training of international talents his goal. As he pointed out, It was my great efforts to learn English that helped me study abroad, while it is English that gives me another pair of eyes, enabling me to broaden my mind and to think in an internationalized way. Therefore, he said, he hopes his students can have a good mastery of English that will help them become international talents.

Led by Prof. Tang, about 10 students attended Challenge Cup of College Students and won first place in the 2015 South China area competition, held in Hong Kong and second place in the 2016 China competition, held in Shanghai, where Prof. Tang received the Outstanding Tutor Award.

JNU's International School has grown rapidly under Prof. Tang’s leadership. At present, the school has nearly 1,700 students from 76 countries and regions, making the school a JNU's international card.
