JNU's research group led by Prof. Shao Jingmin held an international seminar and report meeting on March 18 and 19. The theme was History of Overseas Chinese Grammar and Establishment of Overseas Chinese Grammar Database, a major academic research project supported by the National Social Science Foundation.

Shao pointed out that research on the history of overseas Chinese grammar had great theoretical and practical significance to national strategies as well as academic ideas. He also mentioned that the project's goal was to collect and organize document literature with the help of scholars from different countries to illustrate the trail of development of overseas Chinese grammar.

This project has five research teams: America and the Americas; Europe and Africa; Southeast Asia and Oceania; Japan and Korea; and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Each team has two tasks: to analyze the history of overseas Chinese grammar research, including its past and present situations, schools of theory, significant overseas Chinese grammarians, interdisciplinary study and grammar application research; and to establish an information database for the study of overseas Chinese grammar.

The research group invited the world-renowned linguist Prof. Wang Shiyuan of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Prof. Lu Jianming of Peking University and Prof.Dai Haoyi of National Chung Cheng University in Taiwan to be academic advisers. As reviewers, it invited Yangtze River Scholar Shen Yang of Nanjing University; Party Secretary Qu Shaobing of Guangzhou University; Prof. Li Wei, director of the Chinese department at Sun Yat-sen University; and Prof. Zhang Yujin of South China Normal University.

In charge of the five sub-projects are Prof. Li Yanhui of the University of Southern California, Prof. Qi Chong of the Université de Paris 7 Denis Diderot, Prof. KK Luke of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, leading Yun Shan Scholar Shi Dingxu of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and Prof. Zhao Chunli, deputy director of JNU's Chinese Department. Participants in the seminar included college professors and scholars from the mainland and Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Britain and the United States.
