Chen Yiping, deputy dean of the School of International Relations, gave a keynote speech at the founding ceremony of the Zulu-China Culture Promotion Association in the Johannesburg Royal Palace Conference Center on March 5, when its board members took the oath of office. The organization aims to deepen cultural exchanges between Zulu and China.

The speech, given in English, was titled "The Bridge Between People's Hearts: The Role of Chinese Africans in China-South Africa Relations." Chen reviewed the history of the Chinese people in South Africa and China's policy on overseas Chinese affairs. The establishment of the Zulu-China Culture Promotion Association is a good start in connecting the two countries more closely and promoting their friendship, he said.

Nearly 1,000 guests attended the ceremony, including Goodwill Zwelithini, King of the Zulu nation; Mangosuthu Buthelezi, president of the Inkatha Freedom Party; the minister of culture and art; other local officials; Ruan Ping, the Chinese consul general in Johannesburg; Sun Yaoheng, director of the Johannesburg Department of Public Safety; Li Xinzhu, director of the South Africa-based All-Africa China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification; Wu Shaokang, director of the South Africa Chinese Community and Police Cooperation Center; and representatives of overseas Chinese in France and Japan.
